Meet the Board of Directors
Todd Barnett
Todd Barnett is a longtime area educator and camp director. He founded Field School of Charlottesville, a boys’ middle school, in 2007 and was Head of School there for 14 years. Todd has a Ph.D. in History from the University of Pennsylvania and is an advocate for place-based education and teaching our local history. Todd is now developing the Outdoors Civics School, an effort to improve civic education in our region. He and his wife Meredith Montague have four children and live in Charlottesville.
Bertha Durbin
Camp Albemarle has been an important part of Bertha’s life since moving to Free Union VA in 1978. She has been a board member since 1997. A teacher by profession, Bertha holds a master’s degree from the University of Memphis and taught mathematics for many years before moving to VA.
Bertha lives on a farm in Free Union with Charles, her husband of 53 years. Together they help manage a mix of 7 boarders and 19 lesson horses. They have three grown children and two grandchildren who all live in the area.
David Montague
David joined the Camp Albemarle board in 2022. He lives in Downeast Maine with his wife, two children, and assorted pets and farm animals. For the past eight years, he has served as President and CEO of the Downeast Lakes Land Trust, a non-profit conservation organization dedicated to the economic and environmental well-being of Downeast Maine. He has degrees in wildlife biology from Colorado State University and Virginia Tech. In his spare time, David stewards his 200-year-old farm on the coast of Maine and enjoys gardening,
woodworking, hunting, and sailing.
David Smith
David Smith has served on Camp Albemarle’s Board of Directors since 2016. He is a retired geoscientist, a Virginia Master Naturalist (VMN), and a community volunteer. David participates in watershed education activities at Camp Albemarle and other City and County school events. He and his wife Marilyn monitor at least 7 streams twice a year for the Rivanna Conservation Alliance’s (RCA) Stream Watch Program. Prior to retiring in 2013, David was an Environmental Supervisor working on LNG Construction Projects in Qatar. His interests include citizen science, woodworking and homesteading.
Marilyn Smith
Marilyn Smith has served on Camp Albemarle’s Board of Directors since 2013. She is a geoscientist, a Virginia Watershed Educator, a Virginia Master Naturalist (VMN), a Project WET facilitator, and a community volunteer. Marilyn participates in watershed education activities at Camp Albemarle and many other City and County school events. She and her husband David monitor at least 7 streams twice a year for the Rivanna Conservation Alliance Stream Watch Program. Her passions include clean water, citizen science, and math/science education for all ages.
William Tucker
William Tucker has served as a board member of the Piedmont Housing Alliance, Tandem Friends School, Virginia Institute of Autism, First Night Virginia, and for 15 years, was a faithful and active member, and provided legal assistance to the Board that refurbished and reopened The Paramount Theater. He currently serves on the Board of The Center (formerly The Senior Center) and The Charlottesville Band (formerly The Charlottesville Municipal Band).
Michael Durbin
Michael Durbin has served on the board since 2019. Born and raised just a few miles from the camp, and having attended 4-H camps there most years of his youth, he brings a passion to preserve the natural and historic elements of the camp for children of all ages.
